Passage

James 3:13-18

ESV (English Standard Version):

"Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace."

NLT (New Living Translation):

"If you are wise and understand God’s ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying. For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind. But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness."

NIV (New International Version):

"Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such 'wisdom' does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness."

Speaker:

This is Journey with Prayer, prayer journey corresponding to our

Speaker:

episode Leading Differently Together, Teachers with

Speaker:

Amy Jo Smith.

Speaker:

Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good

Speaker:

conduct, let him show his works in the meekness of

Speaker:

wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish

Speaker:

ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to

Speaker:

the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from

Speaker:

above, but it is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.

Speaker:

For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will

Speaker:

be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom

Speaker:

from above is first pure, then peaceable,

Speaker:

gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good

Speaker:

fruits, impartial and sincere, and a harvest

Speaker:

of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make

Speaker:

peace. James 3 13 to 18

Speaker:

from the ESV.

Speaker:

Gracious and almighty God, we stand

Speaker:

in wonder of your majestic wisdom and your boundless

Speaker:

love from which the purest teachings flow.

Speaker:

We acknowledge and glorify you for the precious gifts dispersed

Speaker:

among us, particularly for the gift of teaching,

Speaker:

a reflection of your divine communication with humanity.

Speaker:

We give thanks for the humble and righteous educators who have

Speaker:

dedicated their lives to nurturing and guiding others.

Speaker:

We ask that you would bless those who possess the gift of teaching with

Speaker:

a spirit that echoes the gentleness and peace described

Speaker:

in the book of James. May they teach with a humility

Speaker:

that resembles your own heart, speaking with truth

Speaker:

and love, and modeling righteousness in thought, word,

Speaker:

and deed. Encourage these educators to

Speaker:

seek your wisdom, to immerse themselves in your peace

Speaker:

loving ways, and to impart knowledge graciously,

Speaker:

aware that their influence shapes lives and mirrors your love.

Speaker:

And may your spirit give boldness to all who teach and sow seeds

Speaker:

of knowledge with patience and mercy, fostering a

Speaker:

peaceful harvest of right living in those they instruct.

Speaker:

Bless their methods and means that they may be pure filled

Speaker:

with kindness and always open to your divine guidance.

Speaker:

And we pray for them to be courageous in the quiet pursuit of

Speaker:

this high calling, always leaning on your everlasting

Speaker:

arms for strength and inspiration.

Speaker:

Lord, we also pray for each of us to recognize and honor the profound

Speaker:

impact of these educators in our own lives. Help us to

Speaker:

support and encourage them, contributing to an atmosphere

Speaker:

where wisdom from above is both taught and

Speaker:

caught. The fruit of

Speaker:

righteousness be evident in our communities as a living testament

Speaker:

to their faithful service. We ask you confident

Speaker:

that you hear us and are at work in the hearts of all who

Speaker:

teach and all who learn. In the name of Jesus,

Speaker:

our ultimate teacher and redeemer. Amen.

Speaker:

So as you go through this week, I wanna encourage you. Take the time to

Speaker:

reflect. Meditate on the qualities of humble and righteous

Speaker:

teaching. Consider how these characteristics are exemplified in the life of

Speaker:

Jesus and in the educators that have positively

Speaker:

influenced you. And then engage. Seek out a

Speaker:

teacher or someone with a gift of teaching and acknowledge their

Speaker:

contribution. Offer words of encouragement and support,

Speaker:

perhaps through a note or conversation or a prayer to uplift

Speaker:

their spirit, and finally pray. Here's 3

Speaker:

ways that you can pray. Pray for educators and

Speaker:

those graced with the gift of teaching, that they may teach with humility,

Speaker:

exude righteousness, and be filled with wisdom from

Speaker:

above. And number 2, pray for our learning communities

Speaker:

to be safe places of peace where teachers and students

Speaker:

alike can cultivate and cultivate and reap the fruits of righteousness

Speaker:

and understanding. And lastly, pray for your own

Speaker:

journey of learning and supporting educators, that you

Speaker:

might embody the meekness of wisdom in your interactions

Speaker:

and be an empowering presence for the teachers in your

Speaker:

life. For these references, prayers, and scriptures, you
